This is the proper pick position (hand open)

Note:  The wide portion of the pick is supported by the index finger.  Only a small portion of the pick edge is exposed.  Do not hold the pick like a potato chip.  Correct strumming involves the thumb, index finger, wrist and elbow in unison. 
 
When you start, the pick will feel like it is slipping out and will come out from time to time, this is normal.  Do not overgrip the pick, it will restrain your ability to strum freely.
